Students at Loughborough’s Charnwood College receive arts award

A group of Year 7 students at Loughborough's Charnwood College, part of the David Ross Education Trust, have achieved an arts award following a theatrical workshop and research project.
Each student received an Arts Award Discover Qualification as part of the Artsmark programme, devised by Arts Council England, which encourages young people to unlock their full potential through arts and cultural education.
During a performance workshop, led by Dragons Breath Theatre Company, students were entertained and enthralled by a dramatic performance.
Following the performance, students were encouraged to create still images and movements focusing on themes of ‘evacuation’ and ‘emigration’.
Students then had the opportunity to speak with cast members, where they found out more about life as an actor and asked questions about their experiences within the Performing Arts industry.
In order to obtain the Arts Award Discover, students were then tasked with collecting evidence through individual arts logs, detailing their experiences of participating in arts activities, researching artists and their work, and sharing their arts discoveries.
Alastair O’Connor, Vice Principal at Charnwood College, said: “At Charnwood College, we are committed to delivering a world-class education for every one of our students.
“This rewarding arts experience has helped our students to build their confidence and learn new skills. It has also provided them with the incredible opportunity to interact with professional artists and practitioners.
“Following this achievement, the academy is now working towards the Artsmark Platinum Award.”
Through a range of incredible opportunities, which are made possible through the David Ross Education Trust’s pioneering enrichment programme, young people are encouraged to unlock their potential by developing their character and talent, broadening their horizons by increasing their knowledge and understanding.
