A student from Grimsby’s Humberston Academy, part of the David Ross Education Trust, has been celebrating after securing a bronze medal at a national swimming championship held in Crawley, London.
13-year-old Evie Barber competed at the prestigious English Schools Swimming Association (ESSA) Inter-Division Championships, where she was selected to represent the East Midlands Schools Team.
Evie, who is a member of Grimsby Aquatics Swim Team, took home bronze after finishing third in the 200 metre butterfly. The talented swimmer achieved a personal best of 2:32:32, and was the only member of the East Midlands School Team to secure a medal.
Following this success, Evie has recently been selected to take part in a 6-month mentoring programme alongside Commonwealth and European medallist, Joe Roebuck. The mentoring programme will be made up of Skype calls, emails and planning with Joe to support Evie’s talent development, competition and training programme.
Dan Shoubridge, Principal at Humberston Academy, said: “We have been supporting and following Evie’s swimming since she joined Humberston Academy in September 2016.
“Evie’s commitment towards swimming is admirable and we are incredibly proud of her recent achievements. We would like to wish Evie the best of luck as her swimming career develops toward international representation.”
Alongside academic excellence, during her time at Humberston Academy, Evie has also benefitted from a sports bursary, supported by the David Ross Education Trust Inspiration Fund.
This bursary, which is designed to support students whilst pursuing their sporting talents, has contributed towards extra coaching and travel costs, and the opportunity to take part in a number of sporting masterclasses led by inspirational athletes.
If you would like to find out how you or your organisation can support the Inspiration Fund, please contact Geoff Sweeney, Head of Fundraising at the David Ross Education Trust by emailing GSweeney@dret.co.uk.
