Pupils at Endike Academy, part of the David Ross Education Trust, are improving their creative writing skills with the support of an award-winning poet Paul Cookson. Paul’s name is familiar at the school as he has written many fantastic books for primary school aged children, including ‘Crazy Classrooms’ and ‘The Truth about Teachers’.
Paul Cookson started working with Endike Academy in December, with Year 2, 4 and 5 pupils to improve their writing skills, especially the creative aspects of writing. His work has not only inspired the children he works with, but also children across the school who feel encouraged to write their own poems at home and improve their writing. Paul will continue his work at Endike Academy up to the end of academic year, after which he will move onto working with other local David Ross Education Trust schools – Ainthorpe Primary School and Wold Academy in Hull.
Kate Ranner, Headteacher at Endike Academy said: “Paul has been a fantastic addition to our school. We have seen huge improvements across our pupils and their ability to write, especially with some of the boys who sometimes find creative writing difficult. The sessions have also had a positive impact with pupils’ confidence, speaking and listening skills”.
