Consultation on the Future of Boarding Provision at Skegness Grammar School

Friday, March 5, 2021

Skegness Grammar School, which is an academy in the David Ross Education Trust, is currently designated as a school with boarding provision (with capacity for up to 55 pupils) located at Wainfleet Hall.

We are today commencing consultation on the long-term future of the school’s boarding provision. The boarding facility was temporarily closed in March 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions however re-opened in September 2020 to enable five remaining students to complete their final year studies.

This statements sets out the reasons for this proposal, the timeline, where to direct any questions and how you can have your say to help inform the decision. The Trust Board must submit a business case to the Department of Education along with the outcome of the consultation. The Department for Education will have the final decision as to whether the boarding provision can be removed from the school. The consultation responses will therefore inform the Trust Board’s decision as to whether to proceed with a submission to the Department for Education.

This proposal does not affect the main Skegness Grammar School daytime provision, the Published Admissions Number (PAN) or entry and over-subscription criteria.

The rationale for this proposal is as follows:

  • Over the last few years, boarding across the Lincolnshire area has seen a steady decline for a number of reasons. Now the global pandemic has contributed to the difficulties in making boarding sustainable, and over the last nine months, it has become very clear that we are unable to continue to offer Boarding at Skegness Grammar School after this academic year.
  • There are currently five pupils at the boarding house who are in their final exam years, Year 11 and Year 13. All have planned or secured their next destinations and agreed with their families. There will therefore be no pupils displaced should the boarding provision be discontinued.
  • Skegness Grammar School has not received any applications for boarding for entry in September 2021.
  • Should the proposals be approved by the Department for Education the Trust will explore alternative options for the boarding house, including sale, which would present an opportunity for funds to be reinvested for the benefit of all pupils at the school.

If agreed, the change would come into effect from September 2021 and in the meantime, we will be focusing all of our energies on continuing to ensure that Skegness Grammar School offers a world-class education to its pupils.

We also wish to be able to support those staff working in the boarding facility, as best as possible in securing employment within roles that suit their skills and personal preferences, through the opportunities that may become available within the school, the wider Trust or externally. We will be consulting with employees individually during this period.

The timeline for the proposal is as follows:

  • Consultation period: 08 March 2021 – 19 April 2021 inclusive.
  • Analysis of responses and feedback: 20 April 2021 – 23 April 2021.
  • Inform stakeholders of final recommendation to Department for Education: by 14 May 2021
  • Approval from Department for Education: confirmation to stakeholders: expected August 2021.
  • Change to be in place with effect: from Wednesday 1 September 2021
