The Charnwood College Riders have celebrated a double victory, as the Under 17 and Under 19 girls’ teams were crowned champions of the Dynamik National Schools Championships on Friday.

Both the Under 17 and Under 19 girls’ squads, who attend Sixth Form and train at Loughborough’s Charnwood College, which is part of the David Ross Education Trust, claimed the prestigious basketball titles at the National Basketball Performance Centre in Manchester.

After a challenging few games, the Under 17s claimed their title after celebrating a 73 – 52 victory against rivals City of London Academy.

Holly Winterburn was crowned the Most Valuable Player after a 33-point performance, helping the Riders to an unassailable position as the game progressed.

The Under 19s showcased an impressive performance throughout the competition and went on to secure a 56 – 47 win during the final match against Aylesbury High School.

Charnwood’s India Morrell was crowned the Final’s Most Valuable Player after scoring a game high of 18 points.

Krumesh Patel, Charnwood College Riders’ Head Coach, said: “I am really happy that the girls’ squads have each secured a national title. This is a real testament to all of their hard work and effort.

“We still have a lot to play for this season, and I am sure that these wins will motivate us to keep pushing forward.”

SPORTING EXCELLENCE

As part of the David Ross Education Trust, Charnwood College is committed to supporting talented athletes, by encouraging them to aim high and achieve the very highest levels they can.

As a result of the school’s partnership with the Leicester Riders basketball team, Charnwood College offers an incredible opportunity for basketball players to enhance their talents alongside professional players whilst completing their A level studies. Students have the chance to compete in national fixtures, sports tours in Europe, funded trips to major tournaments and sports bursaries and scholarships.

Alastair O’Connor, Vice Principal at Charnwood College, said: “Charnwood College is one of 16 elite basketball centres in the country, and the programme we offer for talented players is truly world class. Our scholars have access to superb facilities at both Charnwood College and Loughborough University, where they benefit from regular training sessions, strength and conditioning and physiotherapy.

“The programme has attracted the very best basketball talent from across the country, and we have seen many of our scholars progress onto their preferred destinations, both within sport and further education. Our students have gone on to study at some of the country’s best universities, and others have secured sporting scholarships in the USA.

“We are immensely proud of our students and coaches who have secured a number of national titles during their time involvement with the programme. We are so thankful for the support of the David Ross Education Trust, which allows us to provide our students with an array of once-in-a-lifetime opportunities that they would not normally have access to.”

As well as delivering this pioneering basketball programme, Charnwood College has teamed up with Loughborough Sport to launch a brand-new rugby programme for Year 7 and 8 students. The school will be hosting a free Open Day on Saturday 14th April for all current Year 5, 6 and 7 students within the local area, where they will be able to find out more about the exclusive Rugby Development Programme.
