Thomas Hinderwell Primary Academy Continue To Improve

Thomas Hinderwell Primary Academy, part of the David Ross Education Trust (DRET), has shared the news that Ofsted has recognised that leaders have made progress to improve the school.

The inspection team visited the school in April for a monitoring visit and reported that, alongside other leaders, Principal Chloe Webster has “improved the curriculum and ensured that staff are well trained and well supported to deliver this curriculum with consistency.”

Inspectors also noted that “the school’s capacity to improve the quality of education that pupils receive has increased” and steps have been taken to improve behaviour within the school. A “clear and well-understood approach to behaviour” is reported to be having a positive impact.

Other highlights from the report include:

  • Teachers at Thomas Hinderwell demonstrate secure subject knowledge and “lessons are engaging and pupils have positive attitudes to learning”.
  • Pupils can talk about their learning with understanding: “in music, pupils can use technical vocabulary with confidence”, for example.
  • Leaders have taken “swift and effective” action to improve behaviour and pupils “move sensibly and calmly around the playground areas”.
  • Staff are mentioned as feeling “well supported and valued”.
  • The wider support of DRET is highlighted: “the support that the trust has offered has had a positive impact”.

Thomas Hinderwell Primary Academy was graded ‘Requires Improvement’ in February 2023, however significant improvements since the school’s ‘Inadequate’ rating in 2020 were also acknowledged within the February 2023 report.

Chloe Webster, Principal at Thomas Hinderwell Primary Academy, said:

“We are all proud of the progress that has been made at Thomas Hinderwell since our last Ofsted inspection, just over 12 months ago.

“Our strong and continued progress is testament to the hard work, commitment and determination of the whole school community.

“Thank you to all our staff, pupils, and parents and carers for their support. We will continue to use Ofsted’s reflections to ensure that all our pupils receive the very best education and learning experience.

Simon Rose, Director of Primary Education at DRET, said:

“The strong progress Thomas Hinderwell has made was highlighted in the previous Ofsted report and it is excellent to see Ofsted’s acknowledgement that this progress is continuing.

“Well done to all our staff, pupils and the wider school community.”
