The DRET Summer Cup Celebrates 10 Years

Grantham Meres Leisure Center and stadium was packed and buzzing on Thursday 6 July as more than 1,500 primary and secondary students competed in the 10th David Ross Education Trust (DRET) Summer Cup.

Students from primary and secondary DRET academies competed in a number of events, including athletics, tennis, table tennis, swimming and boccia.

The day was hosted by legendary former sprinter Colin Jackson CBE, with a number of other athletes in attendance including paralympic competitors Charlotte Henshaw (swimming and canoe), Ashley Facey (table tennis), Will Perry (swimming) and Libby Clegg (100 and 200m sprinter), as well as gold medalist hurdler Dai Green.

The athletes supported students throughout the day, with Colin Jackson MBE interviewing students as part of a livestream.

Malcolm Arnold Preparatory School in Northampton was crowned as the overall primary winners from the day, with Abbey CofE Academy in Daventry in second place, and Greenfield EYFS and primary school in Kettering in third.

Malcolm Arnold Academy in Northampton were named the overall secondary winners, with Bobby Moore Academy in London in second place, and Humberston Academy in Grimsby in third.

Tracey Hudson, headteacher of Malcolm Arnold Preparatory School, said:

“We loved attending the DRET summer cup yesterday, and it’s brilliant to be able to return to school victorious as primary school champions. As a school, we work so hard to ensure that our pupils enjoy and thrive in sport, and our win is a reflection of that. I am so proud of all our pupils and staff, and it’s such a lovely way to end the 2022-23 academic year.

Megan Morris, executive principal of Malcolm Arnold Academy, said:

“We are so proud to be crowned as the overall secondary winners of the DRET summer cup. Our students always put their all into their sport, and they have worked so hard this year. It was brilliant to see it all come to fruition, and we will be celebrating for weeks to come.”

Shane Ward, Director of Sports Enrichment, said:
“This is our tenth DRET Summer Cup, and we wanted it to be bigger and better than ever before. The atmosphere in the stadium was incredible, and the students clearly loved every second. Colin Jackson was a brilliant host, and left our students completely inspired.

“For us, the Summer Cup isn’t just about winning, but giving the students a chance to demonstrate their camaraderie, resilience and determination, and also have access to some truly great athletes who can encourage and inspire them to continue their participation in sport.

“The event is one of the highlights of the entire school year, and it’s so important for the development of our pupils within the Trust.”

Stuart Burns, Chief Executive Officer at the David Ross Education Trust, said:
“I want to say a huge congratulations to the champions, Malcom Arnold Preprep and Malcolm Arnold Academy and everyone involved in the day. Every year, both students and staff put so much into making the Summer Cup a success and this year was no different.

“At DRET, we know that sport doesn’t just bring physical benefits. Sports and games encourage teamwork and improve self-esteem and motivation. Sport will always be an essential part of life at our academies.”
