Talented students from across the David Ross Education Trust compete for the prestigious Winter Cup

More than 900 students from the Trust’s secondary academies competed in football and netball

16 October 2019: More than 900 secondary school students from across the David Ross Education Trust showcased their incredible sporting talent as they competed for 2019 Winter Cup. This year marks the 8th year of the competition.

The two-day sporting event held at the world class venue – David Ross Sports Village at the University of Nottingham – saw the most talented students from the Trust’s secondary academies compete in football and netball tournaments in a bid to secure the prestigious title.

Students were cheered on by the special guest, Ella Clark from England Netball and Loughborough Lightning. Ella was also on hand to provide students with valuable advice and to share her experiences.

Following tense competition, Grimsby’s Humberston Academy were crowned the Winter Cup champions, whilst Skegness Grammar School gained an impressive second place with Corby’s Lodge Park Academy coming in at third place.

Meanwhile, Spilsby’s King Edward VI Academy were announced the winners of the Winter Cup Shield. Loughborough’s Charnwood College were awarded second place within the Winter Cup Shield, whilst Grimsby’s Havelock Academy earned a respectable third place.

Shane Ward, Head of Sports Enrichment at David Ross Education Trust, said: “Another fantastic Winter Cup at the University of Nottingham’s world class David Ross Sports Village. It is an honour to see so many students competing, representing their academy and showing the key values and attributes sport can teach you: teamwork, hard work, dedication, and resilience. Well done to everyone for giving it all for your school and teammates!  Special congratulations to Humberston for lifting the cup for the second time and King Edward VI for being promoted again for next academic year”.

The Winter Cup is just one of the annual highlights within the Trust’s exclusive sports and enrichment programme that aims to motivate and encourage young people to develop their passions and discover their talents.

By providing an array of outstanding experiences, the Trust supports talented athletes, encouraging them to excel at the highest of standards.

Rowena Hackwood, Chief Executive Officer at the David Ross Education Trust, said: “Events such as the Winter Cup not only provide an incredible sporting platform for our students to shine, but they also encourage them to interact with each other and learn about the importance of commitment and determination.

“Many congratulations to all of the students who took part. It was fantastic to witness the sheer amount of talent we host across the Trust’s schools.”
