Local School Achieves Silver in National Quality Mark Scheme

Falconer’s Hill Academy achieves Silver SMSC Quality Mark status for excellence in Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural learning

Falconer’s Hill Academy, part of the David Ross Education Trust, has been awarded Silver SMSC Quality Mark Status - a national award which recognises excellence in spiritual, moral, social and cultural learning.

The awarding body conducted a virtual verification visit to the school and was extremely impressed by the school’s ethos and approach to SMSC learning. The assessor praised the warm and welcoming environment at Falconer’s Hill, and was impressed by the high standards of behaviour and enthusiasm of the pupils with their learning.

They also highlighted several key strengths of the school, which included:

  • Children and staff speak highly of the school, the Principal and her passion for the Academy. Falconer’s Hill Academy has a strong sense of inclusion and all members of Falconer’s Hill Academy are respected, involved and are valued.
  • Learning is underpinned by collaborative and talk led learning, which encourages children to build connections, communication skills, reflect and critically discuss their thinking and learning.
  • There are strong PSHE and RE programmes of study through online platform Jigsaw, which underpin SMSC, as well as opportunities across the wider curriculum including learning first aid, understanding risk and road safety, clubs, trips and charity events.
  • Pupils have a good understanding of topics, vocabulary and language associated with SMSC and areas such as discrimination and equalities.

Having been awarded the silver SMSC quality mark, Falconer’s Hill will now have the opportunity to build on their foundation and work towards the next level of recognition with the awarding body.

Angela Rock, Principal of Falconer’s Hill Academy, said:

“We are delighted to have been awarded the Silver SMSC Quality Mark. Despite the numerous challenges we have faced over the last two years, ensuring that we are working with our pupils to enhance their spiritual, moral, social and cultural capital has remained a high priority for us. We are extremely proud of the progress we have made, and we look forward to continuing to grow and develop our curriculum and activities to broaden our pupils’ horizons, with the support of the SMSC Quality Mark.”

Simon Rose, Director of Primary Education at the David Ross Education Trust, said:

“Congratulations to all at Falconer’s Hill for this fantastic recognition. The report from the SMSC Quality Mark clearly recognises the culture and learning environment that has been created at Falconer’s Hill over the last few years. This is a fantastic achievement and a fantastic way to go into the Christmas break.”
