Havelock Academy Receives Praise in Latest Ofsted Monitoring Inspection

Ofsted praises leadership for taking effective action in order for the school to become a ‘Good’ school

Havelock Academy, part of the David Ross Education Trust (DRET), has received praise from Ofsted inspectors for taking effective action in order for the school to become a good school in its latest monitoring inspection. This was the first routine inspection the school received since the COVID-19 pandemic began, making their progress all the more notable.

Havelock Academy was rated ‘Requires Improvement’ in 2019, and today’s report affirms that the school is making strides in bolstering the school’s offer, which has involved the appointment of new subject-expert teachers and governors at the school.

The inspectors were highly impressed with Havelock leaders’ united vision for the school, which is supported by staff. They noted that ‘The consistency and clarity of communication have ensured staff are fully committed to the school’s ambition for pupils.’

Inspectors also recognised Havelock’s commitment to high-quality teaching and learning as well as the academic performance of pupils at the school. They noted that the curriculum has been reviewed and developed to meet the needs of the pupils, and that it is ‘broad and balanced’ to provide pupils with a range of experiences. In the classroom, ‘Subject leaders are enthusiastic and are passionate for all pupils to develop a love of their subject.’

The report also acknowledges that school leaders and teachers believe in their students, and create a culture where ‘high expectations for all pupils are the norm.’ However, this is not to say that support is not in place. Inspectors were impressed that the needs of all pupils, regardless of ability, are understood and used to inform decisions both inside the classroom and outside.

Finally, Ofsted noted that Havelock’s progress has been bolstered by well-developed partnerships with other schools in the David Ross Education Trust, which provides the school with a network of other leaders who are able to provide professional development and support. This wider network is part of what makes Havelock’s offer so varied and broad - as part of a family of schools, students not only have access to the expertise of their teachers and leaders, but hundreds of experts across the country as well.

Emma Marshall, Principal at Havelock Academy, said:

“We are very pleased with our latest Ofsted inspection report. We consistently strive for progress at Havelock, and despite the challenges of the last 18 months we have continued to focus on how to ensure that our students are accessing the best possible education with us.

“It feels fantastic to have the hard work we do every day to ensure our school performs to the highest possible standards recognised and to read the wonderful feedback of inspectors, parents and pupils. We will continue to do everything we can to serve our school community and to secure the Good rating that we deserve.”

Mark Neild, Director of Secondary Education at the David Ross Education Trust, said:

“Congratulations to Havelock on their latest Ofsted monitoring inspection report. This report is testament to the ongoing commitment of Emma and the entire team at Havelock to make the school the very best it can be. The team have created an ambitious and warm school that serves its community very well. I have every confidence that through the ongoing determination of the school’s leadership team, Havelock will be recognised as an exceptional school in its next full inspection, and we look forward to sharing the joy of their continued success.”
