GCSE Results: Students at Havelock Academy celebrate outstanding results
Proud students and staff at Grimsby’s Havelock Academy, part of the , are celebrating another momentous year of excellent GCSE results, achieving an incredible overall average pass rate of 98.6%, with students excelling and gaining the best grades across different subjects, including hospitality, hair & beauty, art, photography, sport, performing arts, as well as the core subjects of English and Maths.
Emma Marshall, Principal at Havelock Academy said:
“We are incredibly proud of all of our talented young people and this year group has been no exception. Seeing some of the big smiles today, and happy tears, is one of the real privileges of the job! At Havelock Academy we celebrate all achievements and today clearly demonstrates that – with excellent results across our vocational subjects, sport and the arts, as well as a rise in our results in English and maths. I feel very proud of the students and staff today.”
Havelock Academy students are celebrating with 56% securing grades 9-4 in English and Maths.
In music, hospitality and hair & beauty, students did particularly well, with 100% achieving grade 4 and above or equivalent across these subjects. Sport was not far behind with 96% of students achieving a grade 4 or better.
2018 saw the introduction of the new exams in virtually all GCSE subjects. Under the new grading system, 9 – 1 replaces the old A* – G, with a grade 7 equating to an A and a 4 reading across to a C.
Overall, Havelock Academy has seen an improvement on last year’s results, with some star performances from a number of students:
Taylor Louise Borrill excelled across the board gaining three grade 9s, a Distinction*, two grade 8s, and two grade 7s. She was delighted with her results.
There were plenty more smiles, tears, hugs and sighs of relief all round after students collected their results, with a celebration breakfast.
Charlotte Ashford grinned as she said: “I’m really pleased – they are better than I expected! I can now go on to college to study hospitality which is what I’ve always wanted to do.”
Amongst the top performers was Kaci Mann who achieved 9 in Photography, two grade 8s in English, along with top grades including 7s and Distinctions across her other subjects. There were stand out performances from other students also, with Isaac Stannard achieving 8s and 9s in six subjects, along with some 7s, and Isabel Stoakes achieve five 8 grades, along with other high grades.
Shayden Bevers was very anxious beforehand, tweeting the night before: “I am so so excited!! Nervous!” When the moment finally arrived, he was delighted with his results, with strong passes in English and science in particular, and good grades across his subjects including maths, music and performing arts. He was very relieved as he can now go on to study performing arts in the Sixth Form at Havelock: “I wasn’t sure if I would get the grades to stay, and I had thought about going to college, but I’m so pleased with my results, and I can’t wait to get started in the sixth form. The new building is great and I’ve seen my friends from sixth form this year do really well. I want to stay at Havelock as there are so many extra things you can do besides the lessons, and the teachers really work hard to make sure the lessons are excellent.”
Havelock Academy’s Open Evening for Year 7 pupils is Thursday 12th September 2019, 5-7pm. Call 01472 602000 to book your place.
