Forest School at Nevill Holt Brings Outdoor Learning to Life

Earlier this month, colleagues from across the David Ross Education Trust had the opportunity to experience our brand-new Forest School site at Nevill Holt, offering a first-hand look at the powerful impact of outdoor learning on pupils.

On Wednesday 11 March, a group of our Primary academy principals and staff visited the site, led by Natalie Terris, DRET Outdoor Learning Lead. The session gave attendees the chance to take part in a range of activities that students will experience as part of the programme, including den building, rural crafts, natural art and toasting marshmallows over the firepit.

Beyond the hands-on activities, the visit provided valuable time to reflect on the benefits of Forest School. Colleagues discussed how regular participation can enhance both pupil wellbeing and learning, with early feedback already highlighting positive outcomes such as increased self-confidence and improved school attendance.

Pupils from Bringhurst Primary School, Rockingham Primary School and Greenfields Primary School and Nursery have already taken part in the programme, attending weekly sessions over half a term. The initiative has since been extended to Eastfield Academy, Cedar Road Primary School and Kings Heath Primary Academy, with plans to offer the experience to all schools across the Trust before the end of the academic year.

The following day, Thursday 12 March, the site welcomed two of our trustees, Nigel Langstaff and Andrew Read, who visited to learn more about the Forest School in action. They were joined by Executive Directors Kimberley Lawton, Jonathan French, Jane Spencer and Maria Malty, along with staff from the Governance and Primary teams.

Despite blustery conditions, visitors were able to see the programme first-hand, as pupils from Rockingham Primary School were on site enjoying a Forest School session. The visit provided a valuable opportunity to observe the engagement, enthusiasm and benefits that outdoor learning is already bringing to our pupils.
