Bobby Moore Academy Rated 'Good' First Ever Ofsted Inspection

Bobby Moore Academy Rated ‘Good’ First Ever Ofsted Inspection

Local academy achieves second-highest rating across all areas of school life even after 18 months of pandemic learning

Bobby Moore Academy (BMA) in Newham, part of the David Ross Education Trust (DRET), has received a rating of ‘Good’ in every area of school life in its first ever Ofsted inspection. This was the first routine inspection the school has received since it opened in 2017, and comes after 18 months of pandemic learning.

In their first visit to the school, inspectors were highly impressed with Bobby Moore leaders’ high expectations for all students in terms of academics, behaviour and community engagement. As a result of these expectations and clear policies BMA has put in place, ‘behaviour rarely interrupts learning’ at the school, allowing all students to excel in their subjects without distractions.

In the classroom, inspectors noted that subject leaders are well supported by the expertise across the David Ross Education Trust, and in each subject, they ‘use and adapt resources to create ambitious plans for what pupils need to learn.’ From Reception, the school also ‘makes reading a priority’, from phonics to regular reading aloud as they progress through the school to challenge and stretch pupils’ reading skills and expand their vocabulary.

Beyond academics, the Ofsted report commends BMA’s ‘comprehensive personal development programme’, which helps pupils ‘value themselves while also valuing the differences of others.’ The school selects ‘equalities ambassadors’ who are particularly passionate about highlighting and celebrating differences to raise awareness throughout the school and ensure that all students feel safe and valued. Indeed, the report suggests that this approach is highly successful, as ‘both primary and secondary pupils like going to school and they feel safe.’

Inspectors also note the range of extra-curricular clubs that pupils can take part in at Bobby Moore, including various sports clubs and social issue clubs tackling themes such as climate change.

Finally, in a culmination of support through academic, personal and extra-curricular provision, leaders at BMA were praised for their strong careers programme that prepares pupils for the future. The school provides information to students about the employers, apprenticeships, and universities on offer, and staff receive training about different careers so they can better support pupils in choosing the right path for them.

Daniel Botting, Principal at Bobby Moore Academy, said:

“We are delighted with our first Ofsted inspection report. At Bobby Moore we have made incredibly rapid progress over the last five years thanks to a team of dedicated staff and students. Our aim is to broaden the horizons of all of our students, and despite the challenges of the last 18 months we have continued to focus on how to ensure that our students are receiving a range of opportunities and accessing a world-class education that prepares them for the future.

“It feels fantastic to have the hard work we do every day to ensure our school performs to the highest possible standards recognised by this ‘Good’ rating and to read the wonderful feedback of inspectors, parents and pupils. We will continue to improve as a school and look forward to welcoming Ofsted back for an inspection in the future.”

Mark Neild, Director of Secondary Education at the David Ross Education Trust, said:

“Congratulations to Bobby Moore Academy on this very positive Ofsted inspection report. That this praise-filled report is the first the school has received is a testament to the steadfast commitment of everyone at BMA to make this school exceptional from the outset. The team has created an ambitious school that serves its community very well, and we look forward to sharing the joy of their continued success.”
