Primary Debate in Northamptonshire

Friday, March 10, 2017

DRET primary pupils have participated in a successful debating competition.

Pupils from Eastfield Academy, Cedar Road Primary School, Briar Hill Primary School and Welton CE Academy were involved in the workshops and competition.

Throughout the day, the pupils were encouraged to discover their skills in public speaking through workshops and learned to develop a balanced debate, in preparation for a debating contest at the Royal and Derngate in Northampton.

Pupils visibly increased in self-confidence through presentation and clarity of argument. By the end of the competition, they developed a strong sense of their own voice.

Project Leader at the University of Northampton, Janice Watkins, was a guest judge at the event. She said: “Impressively, Welton took the title through their well considered points in debating that ‘all children should be forced to do sport’.

“I was impressed with the eloquence of all the children taking part and the confident way they debated their points.”
