The Charnwood College Riders basketball teams have secured their place in the Elite Academy Basketball League (EABL) and Women’s Elite Academy Basketball League (WEABL) Finals.
Both the boys’ and girls’ squads, who attend Sixth Form and train at Charnwood College, will play at Leicester Arena where the boys’ team will defend their title for the second consecutive year and the girls hope to take the trophy for the very first time.
After a challenging few games, the boys’ team displayed an impressive performance and emerged triumphant at the semi-finals.
Josh Merrington, Head Coach, said: “It feels great to be going back to the final, these players have worked incredibly hard all season. They deserve this opportunity.”
David Issekya, Charnwood College Riders Boys’ Captain, added: “I’m really proud of the guys and the coaching staff for making it to the finals for the second year in a row. We earned a little celebration at the end of the game but now it’s back to work preparing for the final next week.”
The Riders Girls’ team faced tough competition at the semi finals, but they finally took victory home and will also take their place at the final next week.
Head Coach Krumesh Patel said: “The girls responded well, stuck together and eventually got the win. They have worked so hard all season for this and earned their place in the finals.”
Mark Sutton, Principal at Charnwood College, commented: “This achievement is a wonderful reflection of the exceptional basketball programme that is delivered in partnership between Charnwood College and the Leicester Riders.
“Both teams richly deserve this opportunity to play in the finals and they are a real credit to the academy.”
